JOB DESCRIPTION
Position: Assistant Director, Latin America and Caribbean Program with a focus on Mesoamerica and the Southern Cone
Division: International Conservation
Reports to: Director, Latin America and Caribbean Program
And Coordinates with: Regional program, including Regional Coordinators, country directors, field staff.
Position Objectives
Assist Director of Latin America and Caribbean Programs (LACP), in consultation with the regional field staff to:
· establish program priorities, strategies, and approaches;
· provide guidance for project development and implementation;
· coordinate financial, technical, and administrative support for various field projects;
· facilitate communication and coordination among projects and between WCS and other institutions; and,
· facilitate coordination among field projects and other divisions of WCS e.g. the living collections, media, communication
Promote biological conservation in Latin America and the Caribbean:
· through effective communication and collaboration with national governments, international agencies, and other non-governmental organizations;
· by directing international attention to priorities for conservation; and,
· by influencing policies that promote conservation of priority sites and issues.
Principal Responsibilities
Project Development and Implementation:
· Identify conservation needs within the region and, in consultation with the Director and field staff, help to establish new programs and country initiatives.
· Assist in establishing program priorities, strategies, and approaches for the LACP;
· Provide guidance with project development and implementation through site visits by: encouraging proper data collection, analysis, and publication; maintaining regular contact with and providing feedback to staff; and, by monitoring and evaluating project and individual progress.
· Support fundraising for projects, in collaboration with WCS Development staff and LACP field staff through: development of proposals and participation in fund-raising activities; identifying new funding sources; meeting potential donors; speaking at fund-raising and other Development engagements; and by maintaining contact with and reporting to funding sources.
· Represent WCS programs and projects in Latin America and the Caribbean in contacts with host country governments, donors, governmental agencies and other non-governmental organizations.
· Promote biological conservation in Latin America and the Caribbean among national governments, international agencies, and other non-governmental organizations; direct international attention to important sites for conservation; and influence policies that promote their long-term persistence.
Administration:
· Help provide administrative support and coordinate logistical and technical support for projects, including budget planning and financial management.
· Coordinate agency grant administration, draft consulting contracts, MOUs and other documents in consultation with our legal department and the Program Officer.
· Maintain sufficient familiarity with overall LACP and individual projects to be able to perform the duties of the Director for LACP when necessary.
· Help organize biennial regional meetings of LACP staff, annual meetings with Regional Coordinators, and other thematic workshops and seminars.
Independent Professional Activities:
· Conduct independent research activities as feasible.
· Maintain other relevant independent professional activities in field of expertise.
Qualifications
The Wildlife Conservation Society's (WCS) Latin America and Caribbean Program (LACP) is a large, diverse set of field-driven programs designed to promote the conservation of wildlife and their habitats across the region. The Assistant Director is based full-time at WCS International Programs central office in New York and reports to the Director of the Latin America and Caribbean Program. This position requires a Ph.D. in natural or social sciences, or a field relevant to conservation of natural resources; and at least 3 years in program management experience. The successful applicant must have understanding of conservation issues in Latin America, and excellent skills in writing, editing, oral and interpersonal communication. Fluency in Spanish required, and Portuguese desired. Computer literacy in word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software. Excellent organizational skills, ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks. Effective at both collaborative and independent work. Ability to take initiative, follow directions, and work with a diverse team. The Assistant Director will also contribute to enlarge and uphold the Society's policies towards Equal Employment Opportunities for women, minorities, veterans, the handicapped and other protected groups.
