Hola a todos, Hello to all
Animals in presentations, and im not talking about macaws riding bikes and
do rollerscate, animals in EDUCATIONAL presentations is one of the best way
to educate todays zoovisitors.
We all know that more then 80% of our parks visitors don't reed the
educational signs at the exibits.
there for is the use of a educational presentation of wildlife AND
domesticated animals one of the best methods to educated our visitors.
For Example: Madrid zoo in Spain has a very good freeflight presentation
where for example they used Hybrid sacred ibisses which where taken out of
the breeding programm.
These birds otherwise would have end up in the animaltrading bussines of be
put down.
Now they have a great educational value as ambassador of their wild
relatives.
Please also do not forget that all training methods equall to educational
presentations , medical or husbandry training is pure enrichement to the
animal in captivity in a training programm and yes they get a far better
physical condition which then can result in far better breeding results!!!
To answer your question; the animal gaines a lot.
Animal training is a part of todays zoolife and no zoo can go on with out
animal training!
This type of training has nothing to do and can not be compared with a
circus at any point!
All animals can be trained for a educational presentation, medical and
husbandry training and yes even a bloody chicken and a fish!
Not to forget that animal training is pure fun for trainer and animal.
Animal training bennefits the animals wellbeing for a 100 %, and it doesnt
matter to the animal if it has to perform or do a medical or husbandry
training session.
The Tigers used in Australia are not breeding animals in a breeding
programm.
However ther do breed with some of their animals, to keep up their own
collection.
Their tigers are all 4 color mutations( Common-Tabby( common x white)-White
and Snowwhite) of the Bengal tiger which is far the best species to handle
this way.
We work regullary with Bengals hands on, Some Siberian are also good to
handle but Sumatran are deffenatly not to be handled!!!
After worked for several years at Madrid zoo i went to Germany and started
to work at the world famous Siegfried and Roy breeding facillity, here it is
that i learned how to work these wunderfull big cats with lots of respect.
Traget- and clicker training are the metheods used with these big cats.
Prior to starting to train animals, and many of our colleagues animalkeepers
and yes even those who say i don't like that animaltraining stuff, are
properly allready training their animals on a daily base without knowing!
For example during their daily routines with release and entering their
stables, at feeding time, during introductions, visit by the vet and so on.
When it commes to educational animal presentations, on a daily base
interactions with our animals, husbandry and medical training, make sure
that you know what youre doing!!!
To many accidents have happent in the past and presents because of not
knowing and big ego's.
In the USA zoos are going back to on hands handling of their elephants with
a husbandry training programm, as has shown that offhands working elephant
is a very bad way to keep these highly intelligent creatures.
In my opinion on this matter, one of the biggest problemms is that Elephants
schould keep their keepers for their lifetime and in many zoos they see too
many keepers going and comming.
Elephants bond with their keepers for life just like a marriage.
There are 3 schools where animaltraining can be learned in the USA and
starting next year in Germany at our facillity at ZOONIMAL ZOO.
With kind regards, Un saludo cordial,
Mariano Zamorano
Senior animaltrainer and director of ZOONIMAL.
